Yahoo! Shopping's “~20% via AI agents” is not about your own domain

Don't read the “20% via AI” headline as a statement about independent EC sites. It is a number that closes inside the mall.

Correction (2026-09-15): This article previously relied on one of our runs against Shopify's public demo store (hydrogen.shop), recorded as "stopped at a signup CAPTCHA, 20/100". We no longer use that record as evidence. The run saved no screenshots or HTML, and the same detection does not reproduce on hydrogen.shop today. On review, our detector at the time flagged a CAPTCHA whenever the page HTML merely contained strings such as "recaptcha", and this run's record consists only of such string matches. We cannot say a CAPTCHA was actually shown, and we now consider it most likely a false positive. Our 2026-09-02 note kept the number "for reference"; that was not enough. The affected sentences have been rewritten.

At an August 18, 2026 briefing, LINE Yahoo said that AI-agent-mediated purchases had grown to roughly 20% of Yahoo! Shopping's GMV (sources: Nikkei, Aug 2026, Japan Net Keizai Shimbun, Aug 2026). The feature itself launched in February 2026 (LINE Yahoo press release, Feb 25, 2026).

That 20% closes inside the mall

Yahoo! Shopping's agent walks on Yahoo! Shopping's own product data and flows — accounts, search, cart, and checkout all live mall-side. The 20% means the mall built a road agents can walk. It does not mean agents have started buying from Japanese EC sites in general.

Own-domain stores are still unmeasured

Stores on BASE, Color Me, or Shopify's own domains sit outside the mall. Can an agent get through your signup form? Into the cart? To the pre-checkout screen? The mall's 20% tells you nothing about this storefront walk. The only way to know is to walk an agent through your own store.

Findable is not buyable

Being findable in AI answers and being walkable by an agent are different capabilities; the mall bundles both for its sellers. On your own domain you have to check for yourself. Agentrix measures, with consent, how far an agent gets from signup to pre-checkout in a real browser. It never completes a purchase and never bypasses CAPTCHA.

Try it on your own site

One free diagnosis per site, for consented sites only. We never walk a store without permission, never click purchase confirmation and never solve CAPTCHAs.
