Can AI agents buy from a BASE store? Walking the purchase path via official docs

A customer tells ChatGPT to "buy that thing from this store." What actually happens on a BASE store? We separated what the official docs say from what they don't.

Published Updated basepay-idecagentic-commerceai-agent

Three-line summary

  • BASE offers guest checkout, so structurally an agent can reach the payment step without an account (official help, Japanese)
  • Choosing Pay ID login may trigger SMS verification (6-digit code, 15-minute expiry, Japanese mobile numbers only) — an agent cannot pass that alone (help)
  • The docs say nothing about CAPTCHAs on the buyer path, so whether your own store actually passes can only be confirmed by walking it

What the platform structure means for agents

An agent uses the same screens as a human. On BASE, the cart offers two doors: log in with Pay ID, or enter buyer details as a guest. The guest door means one less gate for an agent. The Pay ID door can require an SMS code that only the phone's owner can read — sound security, but it turns "fully delegated" into "human in the loop".

Payment methods are per-store settings and include Amazon Pay, PayPal and PayPay, which hand off to external login screens — another gate. And after purchase confirmation, buyers cannot cancel or amend orders themselves; enquiries go to the store.

What the docs do not say

We could not find buyer-facing documentation about CAPTCHAs or about distinguishing agent orders in the order list (as of 2026-08-20). Absence of documentation is not proof of absence. When we walked Shopify's own demo store, it stopped at a signup CAPTCHA and scored 20/100 — details here. You only find out by walking.

What a store owner can do today

The BASE playbook lists which admin screens to open, split into merchant-fixable rows and platform residual you have to hand upstream.

  • Put price, shipping and size in text, not inside banner images
  • Make product pages self-contained instead of "DM us on Instagram"
  • If you use the HTML editing app, remember automatic platform updates no longer apply to your theme (help)
  • The full 10-point checklist applies

To learn where your own store's path actually stops, our opt-in study walks an agent through consenting stores only and returns a free report — no CAPTCHA solving, no completed purchases. See the Japan EC agent-readiness study.

Try it on your own site

One free diagnosis per site, for consented sites only. We never scan without permission, never click purchase confirmation and never solve CAPTCHAs.
